Hyundai Accent CRDi Engine piston change

Hi All,

Speed is 90 to 100 kmph range, high way Bangalore to Salem. Engine started getting hitting sound like a  Eicher tractor engine. Sound was proportionate to acceleration . I'm thrilled,  to put foot on accelerator  pedal as if getting more cracks to engine and other places. Pulled over the car and enquired about near by Mechanic shed and got an answer.

The place was Valapady, after 30 KM away from Salem to Attur. Reached shed mechanic came and suspected coolant was not working properly but it was negative, coolant was fine. On the day of Vinayagar Chathurti, obviously, workers were on leave and luckily one Hyundai mechanic is free and he was a native guy ready to check the engine. I yet thrilled to know "whats going on".

I was explaining the things that happened to mechanic like crime scene eye-witness to police officer. He was silent and wanted to take a look deep down of engine and requested my permission for it. I was pleased to do so.

Another one-hour was passed, he was just completed with dismantling of engine head, dismantled pump, fuel injector, timing belt as well.

we have found an issue and estimation to fix it would be around Rs.20 k mechanic said. One Piston lost its grip out of 3. That was the culprit of noise To replace this we need to buy set of 3 Piston, connecting Rod, O-ring 3 liters of Engine oil with Lathe work
Lathe work involves, grinding the cylinder , polishing connecting rod, checking grip between Piston and cylinder. I've learnt below list from the incident that happened.

1. In Diesel engine , check the coolant oil before you start the trip, it should be filled if not.
2. Cylinder Piston assemble will not be come as single, all 3 piston-set need to be replaced even 1 gone
3. Temperature meter should be monitored periodically while we hop on Long trips.

Later around 12 Noon, I've put the things together to mechanic and decided to get the Bangalore to Karaikal passenger ( 56513 ) which was ideal to reach home peacefully. Train ticket was 50Rs from Valapady Gate to Mayiladuthurai.

Monday morning Sep 21st, on boarded Karaikal - Bangalore city passenger to Valapady, and reached shed cranked the engine and it was doing great. Still below complaints need to be addressed:

1. Head is corrosion-ed in the holes , that need to be welded and polished fine.
2 Clutch plate is having minor bend  and getting scratching-like sound while we engage the clutch at the speed of 0 to 20 kmph,
3 Power window's up and down functionality is not working sometime yet to find root cause of this issue for this electrical wiring need to checked.

Over all expense was Rs. 38000. Took the car back to Bangalore around 6.30 PM , hell lot of traffic and reached office by 9PM for the night shift.

And now its a history,  ready for my kid :) Journey continues as life.
